Civil Society and Development: de Tocqueville, Gramsci and silver bullet solutions

Grant Walton, the Deputy Director of TRIC has recently posted some thoughts on the role of civil society and the expectations placed upon them by development agencies.

Grant's entry on the Development Policy blog site revisits some observations of civil society, that although nearly a century old, have relevance for development agencies today.

In October, Grant will be presenting a public seminar on his recent work with Caryn Peifer, Research Fellow with the Development Leadership Program at the University of Birmingham. Their working paper is available as is their blog post.
